Recent news about
advances in artificial intelligence, GPS, and the use of these
technologies in the development
of driverless cars has brought predictions that soon, within a few
years (not decades), cars will have no steering
wheels or controls that allow humans to directly operate them.
Supposedly, they will be safer to ride in with computers in control.
Of course, this
raises a multitude of side issues. Who will be required to insure
them? There is no "driver" to hold
liable. Laws requiring the manufacturer to insure them would
never get past the lobbyists or bribe payers. Driver licenses
could become obsolete. What would happen to NASCAR? Would your eight year old be able to jump
into your car and say "Computer, take me to Grandma's house."
(or "to Los Angeles" ?
Now, here's our
Could people be
banned from riding motorcycles? What about off-roaders or rock
climbers? Artificial Intelligence could never learn to
"drive" a motorcycle because of the amount of full body movement
required for balance and steering. Besides, what's the joy in not
being in control of your scoot? Frankly, it would scare me to
death. There are numerous methods
government could use to force you off your ride. They could make
your insurance unaffordable or refuse to license you. Use your
imagination. We know they'll try to get it done.

informed. Google the subjects (A.I., driverless cars), and follow
the links. Keep in mind that motorcycle riders will
be affected in one way or another. If we delay, other people
who don't share OUR concerns and values will beat us to the draw. We
will be left standing at the starting line holding our cranks.
For this reason we are
forming an advocacy group:
ORACLE - Your Voice for Freedom of the Road.
If you share our concerns and would like to be a charter member of
this group please let us know. You will enjoy the gratitude of
future and current U.S. bikers, off-roaders, and sport drivers.
